7 Best Hikes In and Near Cabo San Lucas

Rated one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations, Cabo San Lucas has a lot more to offer the adventurous visitor than just gorgeous beaches. Cabo, as it is widely known, is located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Cabo San Lucas, together with the famous San José del Cabo are collectively known as Los Cabos and form a metropolitan area of 351,111 inhabitants. Sprawling golf courses and deluxe villas make it a popular destination amongst tourists but outdoor enthusiasts can revel in some of the beautiful hikes in and near Cabo San Lucas described further below. 

The best time to visit Cabo is usually from May to June or early-July when the wintertime visitors have gone and the summertime rainy season has yet to hit. Weather conditions should be kept into consideration year round though as it can get incredibly hot. If visiting during the summer, please consider early morning hikes or going in the late afternoon to avoid getting overheated.

Trailhead Traveler’s Best Hikes In and Near Cabo San Lucas

Cerro de la Z

This moderately challenging hike is one of the best trails in Cabo San Lucas and offers amazing views. Climbing 400′, the short hike brings you to the top of Cerro de la Z, also known as Cerro Prieto. There are spectacular views along the way overlooking Cabo San Lucas and the Sea of Cortez. Due to its proximity to several hotels and short length, this popular trail is widely considered one of the best hikes in Cabo San Lucas. 

Cerro del Vigía Trail / Mt. Solmar Trail

Cerro del Vigia or Mt. Solmar is a great hike that offers amazing views over the Cabo Marina. The trail is located in the very southeast tip of Cabo San Lucas where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. The trailhead is located behind closed gates but from Sunday to Friday every week, a local guide will walk you up the mountain with a group of his dogs for free. Please consider leaving a tip. The hike itself covers rocky terrain and climbs to one of the highest points in Cabo so consider bringing some good hiking shoes and plenty of water with you! 

Divorce Beach & Lovers Beach

If easy strolls along some gorgeous sandy beaches are more your speed, it is hard to beat the breathtaking views of Divorce Beach and Lover’s Beach. Bounded by towering rock formations, Playa del Amor or “Lover’s Beach” is the more famous of the two and offers beautiful views across the bay. Cross the gap in the rocks to reach the larger and equally beautiful, Divorce Beach. 

Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve

About an hour north of Cabo San Lucas, the Sierra de la Laguna is a true hidden gem and a great place to explore the Baja California peninsula. There are several day and overnight hikes to choose from in the area. The Sierra de la Laguna is approached either from the East Cape or from the West Cape, depending on the final destination. All sierra access from the East Cape is self-guided, while most tours and guided hikes depart from the West Cape. The “Sierra de la Laguna High Point”, at 2,090m (6,857 ft) in elevation, is the highest point of the range and in Baja California Sur state. 

Cerro de las Torres

Great views await you after climbing to the top of Cerro de las Torres, also known as Cerro Colorado. The trailhead is just outside of the city and makes for a good morning getaway. From the top of the gravel road, there are 360 degree views of San Lucas Bay and surrounding area. 

Cascada Sol de Mayo

Worth the hour plus drive from Cabo, the Cascada Sol de Mayo is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the Baja California peninsula mountains. The Sol de Mayo waterfall is only 0.6 miles from the parking area. The waterfall drops into a large pool in a secluded lagoon, a true desert oasis. 

Circuito Cerro de las Antenas y Las Víboras

On the outskirts of Cabo San Lucas, Circuito Cerro de las Antenas y Las Víboras is a great moderate hike to see some beautiful views of the city and bay. The dirt trail has some steep sections and nearly no shade so be sure to bring plenty of water. This is one of the most popular hiking options in Cabo as well as a popular trail for mountain biking. 

Los Cabos Hiking Guide

When gearing up for a hike in Cabo San Lucas, it’s crucial to choose the right clothing and equipment. Opt for light, breathable attire paired with sturdy hiking boots and a sun-protective hat. Make sure to carry ample water and snacks to maintain your energy levels. Sunscreen and insect repellent are also must-haves.
